What is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty, also known as the eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the appearance and function of the eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes or repositions tissue from the eyelids to restore normal eyelid creases, contours, and folds while allowing easy eyelid closure. A natural, rested appearance is the ultimate goal. This procedure can easily be combined with other facial surgery procedures like the facelift or brow lift.

Who is a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Many patients in the Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Glendale, AZ area benefit from blepharoplasty, including those who have naturally-hooded eyes that are not the result of aging. It’s important for Dr. Angelchik to determine whether you would benefit most from a brow lift rather than eyelid surgery, since sagging brow skin can cause hooded and sagging eyelids, too. As with any plastic surgery procedure, candidates should be in good health and stop smoking for at least a few months in advance of the procedure. You should also have realistic expectations about what blepharoplasty can achieve, so that your goals are in-line with a safe procedure.

What are My Options for Eyelid Surgery?

There are two types of blepharoplasty that can be performed separately or within the same surgical procedure. These include:

Upper Blepharoplasty

This procedure addresses the upper eyelids using incisions within the natural crease of the eye. Through these incisions, excess fat and tissue can be removed and a new, flattering crease is created by removing drooping skin.

Lower Blepharoplasty

This procedure addresses the lower eyelids and bags below the eyes using incisions inside the lower eyelid. Pads of fat can be rearranged, if needed, and loose skin can be tightened and lifted. If you’re looking to address tear troughs, you should be sure to discuss your options with Dr. Angelchik, as a lower blepharoplasty can’t always correct them.

How is Blepharoplasty Performed?

In some cases, a blepharoplasty procedure can be performed on its own using local anesthesia because it’s less invasive than other facial procedures. Dr. Angelchik will be sure to discuss your options during a consultation so that you know what to expect. Once anesthesia is administered and you’re comfortable, the appropriate incisions are created in order to reshape and rejuvenate the eyes. Once the new contours are created, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and bandages are placed. Most patients return home after the procedure is complete.

Blepharoplasty Recovery and Results

Although the procedure can seem quick and easy, blepharoplasty recovery can be uncomfortable for some patients. It’s important to avoid touching or itching the eyes, and you should use eyedrops as often as needed to keep your eyes moist and comfortable. Dr. Angelchik can recommend over-the-counter eyedrops to help mitigate discomfort, as well as prescribe medicated ones to ensure your eyes stay healthy and free of complication. Some patients experience photosensitivity during recovery, so you should have dark sunglasses on-hand to wear. Most patients feel comfortable returning to public within one or two weeks, although bruising can last longer than this timeframe. It’s important to refrain from using cosmetics during your recovery or until Dr. Angelchik indicates otherwise.
