Popularity of BOTOX ®—What Studies Show

The most popular cosmetic procedure requested by Americans is BOTOX®. This simple treatment is easy to administer and takes just a few minutes, providing instant improvement for smoothing certain types of wrinkles. Studies show that the rapid popularity of BOTOX® is a testament to its success and effectiveness.

Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, recognized as the national clearinghouse of plastic surgery statistics, reports on every cosmetic and plastic surgery performed in the United States. According to this study, more than 4.5 million BOTOX® treatments are performed by their members each year.

Cosmetic Surgery in 2000

In the year 2000 cosmetic surgery really began to take off. Although the ASPS have kept track of trends since 1992, the more recent reports use the year 2000 as a baseline to which they compare the current year and the year before. In the year 2000 there were:

• 7,401,495 cosmetic procedures
• 1,901,049 surgical procedures
• 5,500,446 minimally invasive procedures

Of the minimally invasive procedures, 786,911 were BOTOX® injections. BOTOX® was not approved by the FDA until 1989 and that was only for treatment of uncontrollable muscle spasms, primarily related to the eye. Even so, 700 thousand people heard about it and received BOTOX® treatment to improve their appearance.

Cosmetic Surgery in 2006

There is a considerable jump between the year 2000 and 2006 for BOTOX® treatments. In 2006, there were 4,090,517 BOTOX® injections, a 488% increase over the year 2000. While the study does not show the years between, the drastic increase is likely due to the lift of the ban on advertising BOTOX® for cosmetic procedures that occurred in 2002.

After years of study, the FDA concluded that BOTOX® was safe and effective for cosmetic procedures. Although they do not regulate the providers of BOTOX®, they set forth strict guidelines for the products use.

Overall, cosmetic surgery continued to boom as well, in 2006 there were:

• 10,984,003 cosmetic procedures
• 1,845,728 surgical procedures
• 9,138,275 minimally invasive procedures

The decline in surgical procedures and the dramatic increase in minimally invasive procedures is a testament to continual improvements in the delivery and technology available in the cosmetic surgery field. Similar results with less pain and discomfort and lower cost attract more patients seeking to maintain their youthful appearances.

Cosmetic Surgery in 2007

BOTOX® remains the top procedure in the latest year of the study. In 2007 there were 4,652,192 treatments given, which is a 13% increase over 2006. This accounts for more than half of all minimally invasive treatments for that year.

In 2007 there were:

• 11,795,065 cosmetic procedures
• 1,837,113 surgical procedures
• 9,957,947 minimally invasive procedures

While there was virtually no growth in the number of cosmetic surgeries, minimally invasive procedures grew by 9% since 2006. BOTOX® for cosmetic purposes is a leading factor in the continued growth and popularity of cosmetic procedures.
