Levulan® Fotofacial
Phoenix and Glendale, Arizona
IPL FotoFacial treatments can be enhanced with Levulan®, also called 5-aminolevulinic acid, a naturally occurring photosensitizing substance. This is called photodynamic therapy or PDT. Originally developed to treat cancerous and precancerous lesions, when used topically, PDT has numerous cosmetic benefits. Using a Levulan® Kerastick, the medication is applied to the skin surface and absorbed into the skin cells for 1 to 2 hours. The Levulan® is not absorbed into other areas of the body. When exposed to IPL with the appropriate blue wavelength energy, the Levulan® promotes the destruction of precancerous lesions, shrinks oil glands that cause acne and oily skin, and treats pigmented lesions. It also helps improve skin texture and smooth fine wrinkles. Used with a series of IPL treatments, Levulan® can amplify and extend the range of conditions responsive to FOTOFACIAL™ technology.
After treatment the skin will be red and there will be swelling which is maximal at day two, improving over 7-8 days. Most patients notice some crusting and flaking of skin as the swelling subsides. Staying indoors out of sunlight is essential for the first 40 hours after the treatment. Patients note continued improvement over several weeks after the treatments which are spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided.
Major complications are rare.
