Abdominoplasty surgery, commonly called a tummy tuck, is performed to improve contour of the abdomen. The goal is a smoother, flatter abdomen. The best candidates have loose or sagging abdominal wall skin frequently associated with significant relaxation of the anterior abdominal wall muscles (frequently secondary to multiple pregnancies, major weight loss, or prior surgery). 

For patients who have had massive weight loss, a more extensive circumferential abdominoplasty surgery, may be recommended. That procedure also tightens the back and flanks. A variation of this procedure called a lower body lift also tightens the buttocks and outer thighs.

The abdominoplasty procedure tightens the connective tissue covering of the muscle wall, and removes excess skin and fat tissue where indicated. The procedure is modified to accommodate the relative severity of the presenting problem. Some procedures are more extensive than others. It may be combined with liposuction or other body contouring procedures on the breasts and thighs.

Mini-Abdominoplasty

Mini-abdominoplasty tightens the lower abdominal wall skin only (shortest scar). Modified abdominoplasty addresses conditions where just the muscle wall or just the abdominal skin requires repair. Standard abdominoplasty tightens all of the abdominal wall skin and muscles (standard scar). Extended abdominoplasty tightens the abdomen and the flanks or sides.

Abdominoplasty: The Procedure

The procedure is usually performed under general Surprise abdominoplasty anesthesia either within the hospital or in an outpatient setting. (Mini and modified abdominoplasties are similarly performed.) An overnight stay may be required for major abdominoplasties. Body lift patients will typically spend 1 -2 nights in the hospital or recovery facility.

Abdominoplasty: Major Complications are Rare

All procedures have some degree of risk. While most patients do not have complications, minor complications that do not affect the outcome of a treatment or surgery may occur after some procedures. Major complications are rare.
