A small degree of breast asymmetry is normal for nearly all women. But many women have a more dramatic degree of asymmetry in the form of breasts that grow to significantly different sizes, shapes, or location of the nipple. More than one asymmetry may be present. Most breasts are conical (cone shaped) with a wider base and narrowing at the nipple. Some are tuberous, with a narrower base and similar shape and width at the nipple. Breasts may grow to uneven sizes, or a combination of one more or less conical than the other and a difference in cup size.

The type of cosmetic surgery recommended, if any, depends upon the degree of asymmetry and the health of the patient. If the size difference is greater than one cup you may be a candidate for surgery. Women who don’t meet these criteria may have other asymmetry problems for which correction is appropriate. If you would like the smaller breast to be the same size as the larger one, breast augmentation would be a procedure to consider. Many women want both breasts enlarged, which would require different size implants for each breast to bring them to equal sizes.

Breast augmentation, alone, will not correct all forms of asymmetry, though. If one or both breasts are tuberous, there may be more factors to consider. Correction of tuberous breasts may require mastopexy, with or without augmentation or reduction. Breast asymmetry is one of those conditions that shouldn’t be ignored, even if minor. Let me emphasize that small discrepancies in size or shape is common. Over 87% of women have differences in size resulting from a slight difference in natural development.

Despite the commonality of breast asymmetry, statistics indicate that 12.7% of American women will get breast cancer. One study found that the risk of developing cancer increased relative to increases in breast asymmetry, by 1.5 for each 100 ml increase in asymmetry. So, making sure you are healthy is essential before considering reconstructive surgery. Regular breast examinations can alert you to any change in size or shape of your breasts, and any change in the differences of your breasts.

Congenital breast asymmetry is considered a reconstructive surgery, as compared to cosmetic surgery. Many insurance companies will cover some of the costs of reconstructive surgery, so, be sure to see if your insurance will cover your procedure.
