Breast augmentation is performed to enhance the size, shape, and position of the breast. The operation is more popular now than at any time in its history. Saline (saltwater filled) implants are currently utilized, as are silicone gel implants since the FDA has now approved them for use.

The procedure can be performed through a variety of approaches including the underarm, peri-areolar (around the nipple) and inframammary (where the lower part of the breast meets the chest wall) incisions.
