Can BOTOX® Cosmetic Help with My Migraines?
Currently, there are over 37 million people that suffer from migraine headaches in the US, 2-3 million of these being chronic migraine sufferers. For individuals who suffer from these migraines, it can be a debilitating thing. These migraines can negatively affect a person by interfering with the ability to function in everyday life, making the most common of tasks a difficult chore. Many chronic migraine sufferers don’t find the relief they need with medications. In 2010, the FDA approved BOTOX Cosmetic injection as a prevention method for adults who experience chronic migraine. Chronic migraine sufferers experience severe headaches 15 or more days a month. The FDA has not deemed treatment safe or effective for those experiencing headaches 14 or fewer days a month. During treatment a series of 31 low doses are injected into the individual’s forehead, neck, temples, shoulders, and the back of the head every 12 weeks. Although not guaranteed to work for everyone, many patients showed a reduction in the number of headaches they got each month. Results from BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment are not instant and can take 2-4 weeks before any improvement in frequency is seen. Receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment for migraine headaches is not the same as receiving BOTOX® for cosmetic purposes although you may notice a slight smoothing of the forehead and lines between the eyebrows.
