How to Prepare For Breast Reduction Recovery

How to Prepare For Breast Reduction RecoveryYou’ve decided it’s time to have a breast reduction, but you’re not sure what to expect afterward. There are many details involved in recovering from any form of breast augmentation or plastic surgery. Our board-certified plastic surgeon in Phoenix can give you detailed instructions on how to prepare your home and yourself for the post-surgery healing process.

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of your breast reduction recovery:

Post-Surgery Recovery Bras

Compression bras or elastic support straps are necessary to protect your breasts, and you may need to wear them for two or more weeks. After this two week period, you might be able to switch to sports bras, but bras with underwire should generally be avoided for at least a month. Your breasts will likely be swollen and tender so a loose fitting bra can help you feel more comfortable. You may not notice the swelling as much because your breasts will be a smaller size.

Sleeping After a Breast Reduction

You need to keep your upper body elevated while you sleep, and it could be difficult to get used to after your surgery. Place several pillows under your upper back to prevent increased pressure on your breasts, further swelling and unnecessary added pain. Some patients surround themselves with pillows to prevent them from moving in their sleep.

You’ll most likely experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort, but Dr. Angelchik will discuss with you which medications can help your pain to ensure you get the proper amount of sleep.

Bathing After Your Surgery

Be prepared to bathe using a sponge until your stitches have been removed and your incisions have fully closed. You won’t be able to lift your arms above your head in order to wash your hair so have a family member or friend help you to clean your hair. Consider pulling your hair back to enable easier eating and in case you were to get severely nauseous. Some patients are able to shower within two weeks of a breast reduction, but speak with Dr. Angelchik before you fully immerse your body in water.
