Reconstruction Options for Breast Cancer Survivors
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor the survivors and remember those we’ve lost to the second leading cause of death among women. More than 200,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and many require some form of breast surgery to remove cancerous tissue and begin their path to recovery.
Scottsdale plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Angelchik offers several different reconstruction options for survivors of breast cancer. The most appropriate choice will depend on factors such as your age, general health, and cosmetic goals, as well as the availability of skin, muscle, and other tissue.
Dr. Angelchik will discuss the best method, benefits, and other elements of breast surgery before you undergo reconstruction. Options include:
- Breast implants
- Tissue flap grafts, where skin and other tissue is taken from the belly, back, or buttocks and surgically placed across the breast
- A combination of implants and tissue flap surgery, if both procedures are necessary
- Asymmetric breast surgery, breast reduction, or other procedures for optimal appearance, feel, and comfort
Recovery from breast cancer and major procedures like a mastectomy are physically and emotionally trying. Dr. Angelchik and our entire team will be respectful and understanding of your needs, and work with you closely to develop a breast reconstruction plan that not only fits your body but also enhances your self-image.
