Sun exposure in Arizona is intense. And while a tan is thought of as attractive by many people, ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the primary cause of skin photodamage and aging. There is no “safe” part of the UV spectrum in terms of photodamage and risk of skin cancer whether outdoors or in a tanning booth. Over 1 million Americans get skin cancer per year, which means one in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma incidence appears to be increasing and is a leading cause of cancer mortality in young women.  The changes associated with long-term sun exposure also account for most of the changes we associate with skin aging including wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, loss of elasticity, thinning of the skin, telangiectasias, and a dull complexion. Sun protection can prevent or reverse much of this damage, delaying skin aging and reducing skin cancer risk. An effective sun protection program includes sunscreen as well as sun-protective clothing, sunglasses, and sun avoidance between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
