Frequently asked questions and answers for out-of-town visitors:
You can make a request over the internet on our website here or you can call us at 602-375-8888. The country code for the United States is 01 for those calling from outside the USA. Our staff will ask you some pertinent questions regarding the procedure(s) you are interested in and about your health history. They will also answer basic questions you may have at that time. All inquiries are kept strictly confidential.
It is ideal to have the opportunity to meet our patients well in advance of any planned procedure and to meet more than once before surgery, as this accomplishes many desirable goals. Not only does this approach allow you to get to know us in an unhurried fashion and establish a comfort level with the practice, but it allows us to properly educate you about all aspects of the procedure(s) under consideration, determine that your expectations for surgery are realistic, and ensure that you are a good candidate for the proposed procedure(s) at the same time. However, in certain instances, it may not be feasible to meet in person multiple times before surgery. We can accomplish many of our educational and screening goals via telephone and email prior to your visit with a little planning and active communication. I prefer that you see me at least three days before surgery for your initial in-person consultation. After you contact us and before your consultation, you will receive detailed financial information, informed consent documents to review, and educational literature regarding your procedure.
Before your consultation and surgery, you will be sent a detailed health history to fill out and return to us. Certain tests may be requested to be completed prior to your arrival in Phoenix depending on your age, procedure, and health status. Examples might include a chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, mammogram, or complete blood count and other laboratory tests. If you have any medical problems under management, a significant medical history, or are over the age of 50, we ask for a letter of medical “clearance” from your local physician(s). We will request digital or conventional photos of good quality to evaluate the areas you are interested in changing for review in advance of your arrival.
This will depend on the procedure(s) you are having, and how easily you can return for follow- up care. Patients within reasonable driving distance may just need to stay a few days, while a longer stay will be recommended for those patients from greater distances or who require a longer period of early postoperative attention, such as abdominoplasty patients with drains.
Safe recovery and healing from surgery generally require some limitations in activity for a finite period of time. Some precautions are universal, such as not driving while on pain medication, or avoiding sun exposure on bruised areas, incisions, and areas that have undergone resurfacing. A return to normal activity will depend on the procedure performed. We will review specific postoperative care and precautions with you well in advance of your surgery.
If you are traveling alone, then we will make arrangements for immediate postoperative care at a suitable facility. If you require nursing care or basic assistance after discharge, this can be arranged as well.
We are equally committed to caring for our out-of-town patients as those who are local. If you can make the normally scheduled follow-up visits, this is ideal. However, we recognize that this may not be possible for all patients. Individualized plans may be necessary and detailed aftercare instructions will be provided. In making a decision to have a procedure away from home, you need to consider this issue carefully. While serious complications are rare, there may be a need for secondary interventions after surgery in a small percentage of patients that would optimally be treated here. We strive to provide excellent care for you before, during, and after surgery to make your whole experience a positive one.
