In some cases, diet and exercise may not be enough to get rid of stubborn fat, so some form of body contouring is required to achieve desired results. Thousands of men and women have improved and sculpted their bodies by removing unwanted fat using liposuction. The most commonly treated areas are the buttocks, inner and outer thighs, hips, flanks (“love handles”), knees, abdomen, back, neck, and upper arms.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also referred to as lipoplasty, is one of the most commonly-performed cosmetic procedures in the United States and is highly popular in the Sun City, Peoria, and Glendale AZ areas. It is a surgical technique that is used to improve a person’s physique by removing excess fat deposits that are located between the skin and muscle. With advancements in the field of technology, newer techniques have helped to increase the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

Who is a Candidate for Liposuction?

There are several different factors when it comes to liposuction candidacy. The ideal candidate for the procedure will be in overall good health and within an average weight range. The procedure is best suited for those who have a localized area of excess fat or disproportion which can be sculpted.

Because liposuction does not tighten loose skin, those who have good skin tone and elasticity will make the best candidates. Although mild skin laxity doesn’t necessarily disqualify a patient from being a candidate, it’s important to note that skin that has lost its elastic properties may not shrink with the procedure and may sag.

Patients should come in with realistic expectations and understand that liposuction is not intended to be a weight loss procedure.

What are My Options for Liposuction?

Types of Liposuction Explained By Arizona Plastic Surgeon Dr. Paul Angelchik, MD

During your consultation in the Sun City, Peoria, and Glendale AZ area, Dr. Angelchik will go over different body contouring options available to you, candidacy requirements, and answer any questions or concerns you may have. The liposuction options that Dr. Angelchik offers include:

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

The method of ultrasound-assisted liposuction, sometimes referred to as ultrasonic liposuction, makes use of a cannula (small suction device) which produces ultrasonic energy. The vibration frequency of the ultrasonic probe targets fat tissue and liquefies it. Traditional liposuction techniques are then used for the removal of the fat.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

This method of liposuction uses a cannula that is equipped with a vibrating tip to help facilitate the breakup of fat. Power-assisted liposuction efficiently breaks up and suctions away fat, and it is found to be useful in cases where there is a larger volume or fibrous tissue. This technique may reduce the operative time of the procedure.

How is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is considered a minimally-invasive procedure that can be performed in-office with local anesthesia, in some cases. A very small incision is performed at the treatment area, through which a cannula is inserted to gently break up fat and remove it. Once the desired contours are achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures. Most patients return home after this procedure, depending on how extensive your procedure is.

Liposuction Recovery and Results

Dr. Angelchik will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your body as you recover from liposuction. These instructions will cover issues such as how to care for your incisions, how to care for the treatment region, and when you can resume activities following liposuction. It is important to follow Dr. Angelchik’s recommendations carefully to ensure a smooth recovery and an optimal outcome to your liposuction procedure.

In general, recovery from liposuction generally lasts about two weeks. However, this time frame may vary based on the extensiveness of your procedure and the area of your body treated. It is important to remember that in most cases it may take up to six months for you to see the final results. You’ll likely be asked to wear a compression garment at the treatment area to aid blood flow and help the skin adhere to the new contours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you put to sleep for liposuction?

It depends on the extent of the liposuction procedure. We do some liposuction cases in the office using a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. For more extensive cases or combination cases, these will be done in the surgical center, usually under general anesthesia (asleep) with a board certified anesthesiologist.

Can I get liposuction if I am overweight?

Liposuction should not be considered a weight loss procedure. In order to get the best, most long-term results from your treatment, you should be at or near your ideal BMI. Additionally, in order to maintain your results, you should have a healthy lifestyle in place.

Can visceral fat be removed?

Visceral fat is fat that exists between your internal organs and tissues and can only be modified with weight loss. Only subcutaneous fat, or fat underneath the skin, can be removed with liposuction.

Does a tummy tuck remove fat?

A tummy tuck is often paired with liposuction to remove stubborn fat in the abdomen. It’s often up to your plastic surgeon’s discretion whether any fat is removed surgically or through liposuction.

Does fat come back after lipo?

In theory, fat that is removed with liposuction can no longer swell with weight gain. However, it’s possible to gain weight in other areas if you don’t maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Additionally all liposuction treatment areas still will have a thin layer of adipose tissue which can get thicker with weight gain.

Does liposuction get rid of cellulite?

Cellulite is not the same thing as fat— it’s actually the way that the body stores fat under the skin. Your plastic surgeon can discuss specific treatments that are better suited to reducing the appearance of cellulite along with your liposuction procedure.

Does liposuction really work?

Liposuction is an extremely effective way to reduce stubborn fat on different areas of the body. After swelling goes down, most patients see a marked improvement in their body’s contours and overall figure.

You can avoid gaining weight by following a healthy lifestyle with plenty of activity and a varied diet appropriate for your activity level. Your plastic surgeon will make sure you know when you can return to your regular exercise regimen after surgery.

How can I lose tummy fat fast?

If you’re at an otherwise healthy weight and still have stubborn fat, liposuction is an excellent option. It comes with some downtime, however, so non-surgical options can be effective if you want to avoid surgery. These can take longer to produce results, so your plastic surgeon can recommend your best option.

How can I reduce my stomach fat?

If you have stubborn stomach fat, it can sometimes be the result of your diet if it’s high in sugar and carbs. Cutting these down can be a great first step— if you still don’t see results, your plastic surgeon can recommend the right treatment plan for you.

Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, it comes with risks. However, you can mitigate these by selecting a board certified plastic surgeon and following your aftercare instructions.

You’ll receive detailed instructions to follow before your procedure. This might include avoiding certain blood-thinning medications, filling prescriptions, and having certain medical tests done.

How do you shower after liposuction?

You will need to avoid showering for a brief period after surgery to allow for effective compression of swelling in the treatment area and to begin healing. You should avoid soaking your incisions, so avoid taking a bath. You should gently wash with soap and water and pat your incisions dry afterward. Our team will make sure you have detailed instructions about how to care for your incisions and apply new bandages.

How does fat transfer work?

Dr. Angelchik does not use drains on areas treated only by liposuction. will

How much fat can lipo remove?

There are limits on how much fat can be safely removed during liposuction. Most ambulatory surgery centers limit the amount to 5000cc ( about five quarts) of fat removal in order to comply with state regulations and outpatient surgery best practices. Dr. Angelchik can give you the best estimate on how much fat you can expect to have removed during your procedure.

At the same time that the fat is liquefied, the underlying tissues are stimulated to contract and begin producing more collagen. This results in skin tightening as well as fat removal. Laser liposuction has fallen out of favor to some extent recently because of surface irregularities in the liposuction areas.

There is currently no “best” type of liposuction. Power assisted liposuction using a vibrating cannula and ultrasonic (Vaser) liposuction are popular modalities.
