Liposuction, also referred to as lipoplasty, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. It is a surgical technique that is used to improve a person's physique by removing excess fat deposits that are located between the skin and muscle. With advancements in the field of technology, newer techniques have helped to increase the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.
In some cases diet and exercise may not be enough to get rid of stubborn fat and some form of body contouring is required to achieve desired results . Thousands of men and women have improved and sculpted their bodies by removing unwanted fat using liposuction. The most commonly treated areas are the buttocks, inner and outer thighs, hips, flanks ("love handles"), knees, abdomen, back, neck and upper arms.

Is Liposuction Right For Me?
There are several different factors when it comes to liposuction candidacy. The ideal candidate for the procedure will be in overall good health and be within an average weight range. The procedure is best suited for those who have a localized area of excess fat or disproportion which can be sculpted.
Because liposuction does not tighten loose skin, those who have good skin tone and elasticity will make the best candidates. Although mild skin laxity doesn't necessarily disqualify a patient from being a candidate, it's important to note that skin that has lost its elastic properties may not shrink with the procedure and may sag.
Patients should come in with realistic expectations and understand that liposuction is not intended to be a weight loss procedure.
Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
The method of ultrasound-assisted liposuction, sometimes referred to as ultrasonic liposuction, makes use of a cannula (small suction device) which produces ultrasonic energy. The vibration frequency of the ultrasonic probe targets fat tissue and liquefies it. Traditional liposuction technique is then used for the removal of the fat.
Power Assisted Liposuction
This method of liposuction uses a cannula that is equipped with a vibrating tip to help facilitate the breakup of fat. Power assisted liposuction efficiently breaks up and suctions away fat, it is found to be useful in cases where there is larger volume or fibrous tissue. This technique may reduce the operative time of the procedure.
During your consultation, Dr. Angelchik will go over different body contouring options available to you, candidacy requirements, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Mommy Makeover and Liposuction
Pregnancy can take its toll on a woman’s body, resulting in physical changes such as excess skin, stubborn fat deposits, and cellulite throughout the body. Sometimes, these changes make it very difficult to regain your pre-pregnancy figure, even with a rigorous diet and exercise regimen. In these situations, a mommy makeover can help you restore the toned, sculpted body you enjoyed prior to pregnancy and childbirth. Every woman has a unique body type. As a result, there is no “one size fits all” liposuction technique to achieve your mommy makeover goals. Dr. Angelchik will listen carefully to your aesthetic goals and evaluate your body contour in order to develop a customized liposuction treatment plan to include in your mommy makeover.
Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?
Many of our Scottsdale, Arizona, area patients want slimmer, more attractive contours in their midsection. Both liposuction and a tummy tuck can help you achieve the look you want, but deciding which procedure is right for you depends entirely on your body and your aesthetic goals. The answer may be that you want both. Liposuction is a good choice for patients who want to enhance their natural contours by removing unwanted pockets of excess fat. It is ideal for patients who are at their ideal body weight and need help with fat deposits that aren't responding well to diet and exercise. However, a tummy tuck usually includes liposuction, but also accounts for loose and excess skin that may be left behind after fat loss or pregnancy. Dr. Angelchik can customize your tummy tuck procedure to address your specific body concerns. The best way to determine if you should go for liposuction, a tummy tuck, or both is to discuss your options with Dr. Angelchik during your consultation.
If Dr. Angelchik finds that neither liposuction or a tummy tuck on their own are the best option for you, he may suggestion that you consider a revolutionary option: lipoabdominoplasty.
Many of the principles of lipoabdominoplasty are the same as traditional liposuction and traditional tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) in that it combines fat and skin removal with muscle tightening. The liposuction performed is more aggressive in the area of the tummy with less direct undermining of the skin. This means that blood vessels and nerves are spared, which helps the healing process.
Using this increasingly popular technique, Dr. Angelchik removes fat while flattening the abdominal muscles and removing excess skin and stretch marks. Dr. Angelchik begins the lipoabdominoplasty procedure by performing liposuction on the abdomen. Skin from the level of the navel to just above the pubic bone is excised as in an abdominoplasty, but lymphatic vessels are not touched so that postoperative swelling is minimized. The abdominal muscles are tightened and the abdominal skin is pulled down and closed with sutures.
Advantages of Lipoabdominoplasty
Lipoabdominoplasty allows patients to retain more of the feeling in their abdominal area and have an easier recovery. Using the lipoabdominoplasty procedure, Dr. Angelchik is able to preserve approximately 70 percent of abdominal skin blood flow, rather than the 20 percent that remains using traditional techniques.
The improved blood flow allows Dr. Angelchik to be more aggressive with the liposuction portion of the procedure. This helps him control the contours of the abdomen better. Other advantages of lipoabdominoplasty over traditional tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and liposuction procedures include:
- Shorter scars for most patients
- Lower rate of postoperative complications
- Less likelihood of postoperative numbness
- Less swelling, bruising and pain
Currently, Dr. Angelchik is the only West Valley plastic surgeon performing the Saldanha lipoabdominoplasty.
Benefits of Liposuction
Liposuction is a safe and effective way to remove stubborn pockets of fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise. It can achieve dramatic results, helping you look and feel your very best. There are many benefits to this procedure that extend to every aspect of your life.
Your liposuction procedure can significantly benefit your overall health and well-being. In order to maintain your newly toned body contour for years to come, it will be important to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. While the fat cells removed by liposuction will not regenerate, it is still possible to gain weight after liposuction if you fail to take proper care of your body.
Many of our Phoenix area liposuction patients find that they experience greater motivation to eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle after their procedure. These lifestyle adjustments will pay enormous dividends to your long term health.
Liposuction can be used to sculpt areas of your body that have not responded to diet and exercise. By removing unwanted fat in troublesome areas, you can look your best. Liposuction can have a dramatic impact on the appearance of your:
Many patients find that their clothes fit better after their procedure, and many enjoy the confidence to wear clothing that they never felt comfortable in before.
Your improved appearance following liposuction can result in a significant boost in self-confidence. The self-consciousness felt prior to undergoing your procedure is often replaced with immense pride in knowing that you look your very best. This renewed confidence will impact your interactions with others, which can benefit both your personal and professional life.
Our plastic surgeon will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your body as you recover from liposuction. These instructions will cover issues such as how to care for your incisions, how to care for the treatment region, and when you can resume activities following liposuction. It is important to follow Dr. Angelchik’s recommendations carefully to ensure a smooth recovery and an optimal outcome to your liposuction procedure.
In general, recovery from liposuction generally lasts about two weeks. However, this time frame may vary based on the extensiveness of your procedure and the area of your body treated. It is important to remember that in most cases it may take up to six months for you to see the final results.
Initial Stages of Liposuction Recovery
You may experience some soreness and minor discomfort immediately following your liposuction procedure. If necessary, Dr. Angelchik can prescribe medication to alleviate this discomfort. Your skin may experience some redness for a few days, but this will gradually subside.
It is common to experience swelling in the treated region following liposuction. This swelling will gradually subside as you heal. The following steps may help reduce your swelling as quickly as possible:
- Stay hydrated
- Eat a low sodium diet
- Get plenty of rest, and avoid resuming normal activities before you are ready to do so
- Gently massage the treatment region to improve circulation
Dr. Angelchik will typically have you wear a compression garment for several weeks after liposuction to provide support, reduce swelling, and promote a faster recovery. Wearing a compression garment will also reduce the risk of liposuction complications such as skin looseness.
Resuming Activities following Liposuction
You should resume light activity such as gentle walking as soon as you feel up to it. This should occur within the first few days after your procedure. This light activity is an important part of the liposuction recovery process, preventing the formation of blood clots and reducing your risk of liposuction complications.
You can generally resume normal activities within about two weeks, but you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least one month so that your body heals properly.
Am I a Good Candidate For Liposuction?
While liposuction is an effective way to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat, it is not a substitute for diet and exercise. In fact, it is very important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise regularly to prevent future weight gain. Any fat cells that are removed through liposuction will not regenerate. However, it is possible for the remaining fat cells to grow if you begin to gain weight after liposuction.
If you do gain weight following your procedure, you may find that fat accumulates in areas of the body that were never problematic before. This may result in unwanted and possibly unflattering alterations to your newly toned body contour. To prevent this from happening, it is crucial that you stay physically active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Liposuction is a useful option to help you reach your overall aesthetic appearance goals. Whether you elect it in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures like abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, or undergo liposuction by itself, you should definitely discuss the option with Dr. Angelchik during your consultation. He will help you understand who is a good candidate for liposuction and see if you are.
During your medical evaluation, Dr. Angelchik will collect a detailed medical history and try to get a better understanding of your emotional reasons for electing treatment. In some cases, a physical or a psychological reason may preclude you from being a good candidate.
- Non-smoker – Smoking is bad for your skin, making it inelastic. It also hinders healing following any type of procedure. The vascular damage caused by liposuction is worsened when your capillaries cannot heal.
- Good overall health – Liposuction is a real surgery that requires you to be able to heal effectively. Being in good overall health is a key requirement. Certain medications may preclude you from being a considered a good candidate.
- Achieved weight loss goals – Liposuction is not a weight loss solution, you should already have achieved significant weight loss prior to surgery.
- Realistic expectations – A clear understanding of what liposuction can and cannot do is important. The largest complaint with the procedure is due to unrealistic patient expectations.
Cosmetic surgery may help improve your looks, but it cannot impart self-esteem. A health dose of self-esteem must already be present. Only a small amount of fat can safely be removed during a session, so understanding that will help you appreciate the improvements.
As with all surgical procedures, there are risks and complications involved with liposuction. These risks must be weighed thoughtfully during your consultation prior to undergoing the procedure. Complications include, but are not limited to:
- Reaction to lidocaine
- Excessive pain
- Uneven sculpting
The best way to mitigate these risks is to choose a qualified cosmetic surgeon to help you understand who is a good candidate for liposuction before ever undergoing the procedure.
