How to Prepare for Surgery

However, your doctor will generally ask that you do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your procedure. This is because having an empty stomach before surgery decreases the risks of anesthesia. If you do accidentally eat or drink before your surgery, be sure to let your doctor or nurse know right away. What to Expect on Your Outpatient Surgery Day
A couple of days before your surgery, you may receive a call from the hospital to let you know what time you should arrive, which is usually 1-2 hours before the procedure. Once you check into the hospital, you will go to the Day Surgery area, where you will be assigned a nurse. He or she will ask if you have had anything to drink or eat before coming to the hospital and may ask whether or not there is a chance you may be pregnant. What Happens After Surgery?
Once your outpatient procedure is complete, you will be taken to a temporary recovery room. There, a nurse will check on you frequently, taking your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. You may feel cold or chilly following surgery which is normal. If you are thirsty and your doctor says it is OK for you to drink, your nurse may offer you water, or other clear liquids. After you have had time to fully wake up and are comfortable, the nurse will remove your IV and help you get ready to go home.
