What happens during a face lift?
Face lift procedures involve removing excess skin and repositioning the remaining skin and underlying tissues to restore a younger, smoother and more refreshed appearance. There are several facelift techniques that can be applied depending on the patient anatomy and goals for surgery. A facelift typically works on the lower two thirds of the face and extends to the neck. It can be done in conjunction with other facial procedures such as eyelid surgery, nose enhancements, or a forehead lift.
What are the benefits of a face lift procedure?
A face lift reverses many of the visible signs of aging. Combined with post-surgery care and the use of facial rejuvenation products, it can also remove sun damage and scarring. A face lift may enhance self-confidence and pride in one’s appearance by giving a younger, more refreshed and attractive look.
Who is a good candidate for a face lift?
The best candidate is someone who has begun to show the facial signs of aging, but whose skin still retains a certain amount of elasticity. You would need to be in good general health. Your expectations need to be realistic. It is important to discuss your concerns and expectations with Dr. Angelchik, as these topics are an important facet of the initial consultation. Every conscientious cosmetic surgeon wants patients to understand what the chosen procedure can do for them, and what it can’t do.
How long is the recovery period?
Recovery time often depends on the individual who is undergoing surgery. Most people can return to work within 2 – 3 weeks. It is important to understand that bruising may remain for up to three weeks. Exposure to the sun should be very limited and when you do go outdoors, be sure and use a sunblock. Vigorous activities should be avoided for two weeks.
How long will the results of a face lift last?
That will depend in part on how well you maintain your skin’s health. It also depends on the genetic aging process for some individuals because some people show the effects of age much sooner than others. Facial procedures can last anywhere from 5-10 years. Other factors affecting the durability of the procedure include:
- Tobacco use
- Sun exposure and other lifestyle and environmental factors
- Skin elasticity and condition
