How to Choose Between a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction
Weight gain and loss, age or pregnancy can all leave you with troublesome areas that diet and exercise can’t correct. Many men and women struggle with excess fat or skin tissue and look to liposuction or a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to get rid of their unwanted fat or skin, but which is the better option? The answer depends on your body and your desired results.
There are a few factors to consider when choosing between the two plastic surgery procedures, but the best way to know whether lipo or a tummy tuck is right for you is by scheduling a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon.
Excess Skin Vs. Excess Fat
Lipo is a great option for those who have unwanted fat in their abdomen, but a strong abdominal wall and little to no excess skin. However, a tummy tuck is usually the best choice for those who have weakened muscle tissue and lax skin, often due to pregnancy. A tummy tuck can flatten the abdomen, but won’t remove as much fat tissue as lipo. Sometimes these procedures can be done together. Our plastic surgeon offers the Lipoabdominoplasty procedure which combines fat removal with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal.
General or Local Anesthesia
While both procedures are safe and effective, a tummy tuck is more invasive and requires general anesthesia which elevates your risk of complications. Tumescent liposuction uses local anesthesia so you can stay awake during the procedure. The recovery process can be more extensive after an abdominoplasty than liposuction, depending on the degree of the procedure.
