Sun Damage

When we think of a tan, it’s not uncommon to automatically associate a glowing complexion with good health.  Unfortunately, the sun is responsible for much of the skin changes that we consider to be normal signs of aging. Sunburns are an obvious sign of skin damage, but suntans are rather damaging as well. When you get a tan, it is the result of the sun’s rays killing some cells and damaging others. Sun exposure can cause the following changes in your skin:

  • Pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions
  • Benign tumors
  • Wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Irregular pigmentation

Too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays can also cause elastosis, which occurs when the fibers in the skin are damaged. A breakdown in elastin makes it so the skin doesn’t bounce back into place after stretching, causing the skin to sag and stretch.
