Many people use cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery interchangeably. On the surface, there is nothing wrong with this, but when selecting a surgeon for your procedure, these words have significance.
Anyone with a medical degree can call themselves a “cosmetic surgeon.” Only someone who has undergone additional training and residencies specifically focused on aesthetic and/or reconstructive surgery can use the title plastic surgeon.
To become a board-certified plastic surgeon, a doctor must first pass both written and oral exams from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. They must also submit before and after photos of their work to a panel of board-certified plastic surgeons for review. Only after they have completed additional training, passed rigorous tests, and submitted proven results can they become board-certified, and only a board-certified plastic surgeon has the experience necessary to provide you with the results you deserve.
